Elias Ghekiere (1991°) is a 2017 Laureate of the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) post-academic course in Ghent (BE). He holds a MFA in Painting and Ceramics from the PXL-Mad School of Arts (2014 and 2022). In 2022 he had his first institutional solo-show in Z33, House for contemporary Arts, Architecture and design.
The artistic practice of Elias Ghekiere is shaped by the history of style and technique. Through this lens he investigates our relations with- and experience of art and life. Working within painting, drawing, photography and sculpture, he plays with the relations between modes of representation, materialities and techniques. Apart from diverse art historical references, there is a focus on images, materials, and phenomena that are tainted by historic or contemporary biases, such as decoration, ornament, pastiche, and crafts. The inclusion of these imageries and aesthetics is indicative of a belief in art as a way to connect through engagement, rather than divide through categorisation.
In 2024 he started a doctoral research at Hasselt University and PXL-MAD School of Arts, funded by the Special Research Fund (BOF) of Hasselt University (BOF23DOC15). More on this research can be found Here.
