BZT Henis

This project initiated with the idea of building my own wood-kiln during the Corona Lockdown.
Whilst looking for materials to build my kiln, we found clay-like soil in neighbouring fields. This soil is often referred to as ‘Potjaad’ in local dialect.

After further delving, consistent solid lumps of green clay were found, containing transparent crystals.
In collaboration with a geologist and a mineralogist, we were able to determinate it as clay from the ‘Lid of Henis’- a marine deposit from Oligocene epoch. The crystals are evaporite gypsum crystals.

After the delving and processing of the clay, sculptures were made and fired in a DIY woodfired kiln.
